Nigeria..... As we know, is a very large country. It's about 170 million, and consists of three large tribes: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo.
These three tribes make up the north-north east, west, and south east. However, there are minority tribes in the south south and south west region of the country. These two regions make up the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta is mostly known to all Nigerians for its crude oil. If we look beyond oil, we'd see that the Niger Delta also has a massive division of tribes and cultures. I've lived in this region all my life so I may know 1 or two things about the tribes and their cultures, way of living and how people view them. So below is the list of facts that I've summarized.
1. Each states in the Niger Delta has a major tribe and many other minorities... They're as follows
Edo- Edo, esan, auchi, etc
Delta- urhobo, ijaw, isoko, itsekiri, okpe, agbor, orogun, kwale, etc
Bayelsa- ijaw
Rivers- ikwere, ijaw, etc
Akwa ibom- ibibio
Calabar- ibibio
Imo- Igbo
Ondo- Yoruba
Edo- Edo, esan, auchi, etc
Delta- urhobo, ijaw, isoko, itsekiri, okpe, agbor, orogun, kwale, etc
Bayelsa- ijaw
Rivers- ikwere, ijaw, etc
Akwa ibom- ibibio
Calabar- ibibio
Imo- Igbo
Ondo- Yoruba
These are some of the tribes I can remember for each states. There are even more.
2. Here is the different tribes and personalities
Edo- the edo as a tribe is rich with beads and tradition. They use beads the most in the Niger Delta. People (especially in delta) are afraid of them because of there use of dark power. There's a saying in warri that if you see an edo man then see a python, kill the edo man first. Lol. These people have the famous Oba of Benin.
Esan- well, nothing much is known by me for this tribe because they're also viewed as edo people. Similar culture.
Auchi- the average man in this tribe is a Muslim. They bear Muslim names and are mostly fair in complexion. They are calm and kind as viewed by others
Urhobo- this tribe in delta state is among the proud people of the region. It's blessed with strong women who would work to support the husband. It's also blessed with a massive number of lands in Delta. People view the men as lazy since they depend mostly on their wife's. Their women on the other hand, are not very beautiful.
Ijaw- this tribe is blessed with masculine men. They have a massive mass of water and the people are excellent swimmers. They are known by others for two two things. First of all, they are generous and always help each other. Second of all, they believe in prosperity not progress(they want quick money by any means disregarding the circumstances).
Isoko- this tribe is almost like urhobo but it's exactly the opposite when it comes to the marriage issue. The women are lazy while the husband would work for food. This tribe is generally known to be stingy. When I researched by studying them better, I found out they aren't really stingy, it's just that they're too proud so people would actually think they are very rich. When requested some money, they won't give you, not because they're stingy but actually because they don't have but you think they do
Itsekiri- this tribe detaches themselves from others. They're generally introverts when mixed with others. But they always assist each other that's why they are mostly rich. They are known to be racist which I can't argue much. Their king (olu of warri) is situated at warri (AJamimogha) but their land stretches into the sea as far as escravos.
Ikwere- this tribe at port Harcourt is Igbo-like in nature. Their language almost identical as the Igbo, and their way of speaking and living.
Ibibio- situated at akwa ibom and calabar is this tribe that arguably has the most beautiful girls. They have the most beautiful and cleanest states in the country. They are known for their calabar festival which is a tourist attraction. People from other parts of the Niger Delta generally are afraid of going to either of the states because they eat people. They still have cannibals. People from akwa ibom- travel to other states for income pursuit but people from calabar are mostly at their states and don't build houses outside the state.
Although there are some tribes I might have jumped. The reason is that they mostly bear same trait as others. Like kwale and ikwere are same. Abgor tend to be almost the same as well just that they are less spiritual. Okpe are situated near itsekiri people and bear almost same trait as urhobo.
3. Tribes in the Niger Delta are generally forceful when it comes to protest. Unlike the so called peaceful protest that is been used elsewhere, whenever the mass rises up, the land actually shakes.
4. Don't be deceived. Just as no two out of the three major tribes in Nigeria freely agrees with one another, no two tribes in the Niger Delta also agrees together.
5. The people of Niger Delta believes in one Nigeria. So do I.
OK. These are some of the facts I've gathered. You could email me to add more, or to correct me. This post would have an update soon. But my next post on this issue would be specifically facts about warri...... Check regularly.
